What do they call the act of putting together images aimed to form a new texture, feeling, or emotion? A collage? I'm not quite sure yet, but all I know is that I absolutely adore combining different objects from different areas, as shown in the pictures above: art, advertising, fashion editorials and jewellery.

For instance, the tone or mood I was trying to create was something towards a turquoise, romantic yet mysterious bubble. A bubble where everything inside is considered sacred, precious, even private. Backdrops and decorative objects are painted with dégradés of pink, emerald green and peach. The protagonist is a girl (it's always a girl for some reason). She has this inner beauty that outshines her physique, always draped in flowy Grecian gowns covered with a million glittery diamonds. She sparkles like no other and instead of dwelling and complaining on what is missing in her life, she feels grateful for her blessings. Skies are always pink or mauve. They're the ones who inspire her everyday and who make her wonder how on Earth did she end up in heaven...

THE SELFISH ROMANTIC - L'EGOISTE ROMANTIQUE

The title of this blog post is a reference to a French novel that I am reading at the moment, written by Frederic Beigbeder. First time I read his books, and from what I've read so far, this guy is such a character. But is he a character just for the sake of being one? I've come to realise that he has actually come out with several sentences that make you stop and think. The book is about a journalist, Oscar Dufresne, who keeps a daily diary for the tabloid he works for. I find Oscar to be smart, funny, at times even philosophical. He writes about society as he sees it (which unfortunately is a hard-to-admit reality): a consumer-driven society where everything and anything has somewhat to do with sex and/or money; morals and values have disappeared, culture has come down to reality TV where people worship celebrities as if fame is the ultimate validation to having made it in life. I haven't finished the book but so far the way Oscar describes our world is disturbingly pessimistic. He is what he calls himself a 'selfish romantic', someone who lives a decadent life but deep down who is longing for a change, one that will bring him a slice of utopia, where love lasts and desires are conquered and overthrown. The author discusses this matter with fellow French philosopher Alain Finkielkraut in French Elle's most recent issue. He had written a book entitled 'L'amour dure trois ans' (love lasts three years) in 1997. Finkielkraut has a new a novel out with a totally opposite view: 'Et si l'amour durait' (what if love lasted). There you have two individuals from different generations comparing and contrasting their ideas. Beigbeder is without a doubt more pessimistic than Finkielkraut, probably due to his own experiences. But I think the way you regard love and its value and standards has to do with the way you were brought up, in other words, childhood circumstances and background. I'd like to believe that we've been gifted with a brain, so why don't we use it when it comes to love? Sometimes love isn't enough. Sometimes it is. I do think that today's meaning of love isn't what it used to be. Some think that because you see yourself with another half for the rest of your life, you somewhat give in to society's expectations. But then again why do we always have to rebel? Part of me thinks it's a way for ideas to evolve. Suffice to say, romanticism keeps me going and lets me dream of something that can lead to even more beautiful things...

This one of Helena Christensen shot by the great Demarchelier for US Vogue sporting Gianni Versace is too iconic for words. I hope to create stand-against-time images like these one day.

I just love this portrait of supermodel Stephanie Seymour, shot by the suave Sante D'Orazio for Vogue Italia back in the early '90s. It's the kind of photograph that makes you think of natural beauty, probably due to her physical appearance: natural wet hair, simple tank top, simple pose, little make-up. To me this picture is sort of an oxymoron; although the portrait has been taken in an uncontrived setting, Stephanie says it all in the eyes: 'I'm confident and am myself wherever'. What a face. Classic.

It may seem odd, but ever since I've come across watching the animated movie Anastasia back in 1997, my love affair with the Russian revolution had begun. I think I owe most of my obsession with this period to this movie because of how well it was made. The details were done so exquisitely that it made it seem so real: from the backdrops to the decorative objects and architecture. Naturally the music and storyline added a certain whimsicalness and myth aspect to it all - imagine my heartache when I discovered that actually Anastasia turned out to be an impostor! Nevertheless, this marked my first steps into discovering more about Russian history and culture. I had started to read Orlando Figes' Natasha's Dance: A Cultural History of Russia and discovered how rich the country was in terms of art, literature, religion, rituals, traditions and their way of living. It's interesting how the monarchy was a sort of window to the outside world, showing the best they could afford. I found it astonishing how literature and artwork and theatre played such an important role. Nonetheless, Russia's history is more than impressive, in both pre and post revolution eras. So impressive in fact that it has been a constant reference and inspiration for countless fashion editorials to my utmost delight (see above). The royal costumes and jewellery, in particular those of tsarinas are being used and reused; and in my opinion, it never goes out of style. The aesthetic opulence this country has brought over the last centuries is astonishing. I'm definitely planning to visit Russia in the near future and eventually study and learn the language (after all my name is Russian, the perfect excuse!). I'm dying to visit the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, the Red Square in Moscow, and Dasha's Garage Center for Contemporary Culture! I think it's to be commanded what the new generation are doing: creating new platforms and new opportunities for a country that's been oppressed for far too long...

Tom Ford is what one would call a visionary. His ability to transcribe his creative visions from the mind onto paper is truly a remarkable talent. His years at Gucci propelled him to become the icon he is considered today. With a little help from his friends, Carine and Mario, he catapulted the brand into a multi-billion dollar earning company when it was about to declare bankruptcy. When he left Gucci Group (and subsequently Yves Saint Laurent), everyone thought it was the end for both labels. But what I found interesting in his post Gucci and YSL years is the journey he embarked on: he first started with eyewear, followed by a collaboration with Estee Lauder, his perfumes (with highly controversial ad campaigns, in true Ford style), menswear and a critically-acclaimed movie, 'A Single Man'. I could feel the world was holding its breath, waiting for the most anticipated womenswear collection. Finally, he unveiled the jewel last year in New York City during fashion week and it was far from a disappointment. Inviting editors and friends only, he created an intimate fashion encounter for the audience to relish every look strutting down the catwalk, worn by the likes of Beyonce, Lauren Hutton and Julia Restoin Roitfeld. I love how he picked women of all shapes and ethnicities, a trademark he was known for at both Gucci and YSL. Still, the 90s Gucci girl continues to inspire me in so many ways: confident with her presence and sexuality, who doesn't give a flick of what others have to say about her actions and her sartorial choices; but always in an edgy yet sophisticated manner.

What I appreciate in her work is the fact that the way she mixes and matches is so innate and natural. I could forever gaze at the pages from American and Italian Vogue she created back in the day. I'm glad to see she's working again (her work at Purple for instance). Carlyne, if you read this, would you PLEASE do a portfolio/book of everything you created? I'm sure you'd make one or two very happy.

A Vogue Paris encounter...

The first time I laid eyes on what I now call my style bible (although I'm currently questioning the status of worship, more on that later) was in February 2004. Curiously enough, it was while in Amman, Jordan at a family friend's place. I found myself in front of a pile of various international titles when I started flicking through this February 2003 issue of Vogue Paris (see above). The fact that it was in French immediately caught my attention. During my two week stay, I remember dissecting ever single page: the editor's letter, articles, fashion editorials, even how the pictures and text were laid out. I remember them being very personal, almost ground-breaking, with the feeling that it was making a statement. That's when I realised graphic design was extremely powerful, because the choice of layout combined with the choice of photography projected an impact of understated coolness and sophistication.

Naturally, the fashion stories were in a world of their own. I mean I've always been influenced by what's 'à la mode', given that I felt close to French culture. From that moment on, I suddenly had an epiphany: a world of what's bold and beautiful compiled into one single book every single month? SIGN ME ON! I've been collecting Vogue Paris ever since...

With each issue being better than the previous one, I started to follow closely the work of Carine Roitfeld, who with the position of being editor-in-chief, was also the prime fashion editor for the magazine's best fashion editorials. At that moment, I decided she represented (and still does for that matter) the dream job: being the head of a publication (which usually requires sturdy journalistic skills) while remaining creative. Ultimately I was stunned by the strong identity the title projected: it almost felt somewhat independent, niche and not so much answering to the commercial demands most magazines responded to. To sum it up, it was love at first sight.

I've already stated my angst towards Ms. Roitfeld's departure. I even thought maybe I should stop buying the magazine altogether, but I felt partly guilty and partly curious as to see how the magazine will turn out. They say the August 2011 issue will be produced 100% under Emmanuelle Alt's direction (the previously fashion director turned editor-in-chief). I sincerely hope, for the sake of the title itself that something will bring back the magazine to some much-needed glory days. The latest June/July issue made me want to cry. I almost wanted to scream, "Carine worked so hard to make the publication avant-garde, provocative yet sophisticated, always offering the unexpected. And now this??!". No surprises. No challenges. No novelty. We'll have to wait and see. Only time will tell what the future beholds for my beloved bible... But all I know is this: Alt has big shoes to fill. And change is good... right?!

Cindy Sherman is one of those artists who really has a world of her own. When you think 'artist', you ultimately think 'creation'. Cindy does it from A to Z with no exception. She starrs, conceptualises, directs, produces and photographs all of her self-portraits, which I find truly fascinating. She has the knack for portraying women with such defined characters thanks to her make-up and styling skills. All of the above portraits show how strong metamorphosis is inclined to change your appearance. That's where the whole aspect of fashion and individuality collide in the most superficial yet mandatory way: the way one looks can really tell a million stories.

Has it ever happened to you when you started reading the first sentence of a poem you had read ages ago in high school, and realised you actually still know it by heart? Well to my utter surprise, I still recall the exact time and circumstances in which I had to learn this poem below by heart as homework. I remember being obsessed by the theme we were studying, being la bohème, an artistic movement that occurred in the mid-19th century in Paris, France. Its catalysts were a trio of poets: Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Verlaine, who all led a lifestyle known as spleen, resulting in feelings of melancholy, desperation and escapism. Sure, they are a notch away from depression, but this era produced series of works which epitomised Parisian nightlife and the opulence which imbued it. Living in excess has never looked so exhilarating...

Maybe you've noticed just how much I'm obsessed with beauty. And beautiful things. It captivates me and gives me the incessant habit of searching for more beautiful people and objects. I just can't get enough. I wonder if this sensibility increases when you're a Pisces... Either way, those who say beauty is boring because it's supposedly 'perfect' have got it all wrong: like in the ugly, the beautiful also have a hidden message, but one has to dig deeper. It's just done in a more subtle manner that isn't meant to make you uncomfortable but rather make you feel good by sending out positive and strong energy. Anything can be beautiful in its own unique way. Aestheticism is the sole purpose that makes us love or hate something from the outside. Is it shallow? Is it superficial? Perhaps. But I sure as hell prefer looking at something beautiful than something just plain ugly. That said: on the long run, the beautiful may become somewhat monotonous and stop delivering the wow effect; the ugly, on the other hand, if you keep looking at it, will force you to search for something worth looking at. And surprisingly enough, it becomes beautiful. But only in certain parts. There. My 'beauty' theory just went right out the window...

I watched a More4 documentary on the late Lee Alexander McQueen entitled 'McQueen and I' Friday night. The 'I' in fact referred to the late Isabella Blow, the eccentric and ultra sensitive English aristocrat who discovered the designer back in the early 1990s. The documentary gave us a rather raw inside glimpse of the life of McQueen, showing his beginnings and his fall. Whenever I hear someone has committed suicide, it gives me shivers and proof that each one of us control our own actions. Suicide isn't justifiable, yet I am perpetually intrigued by how high the level of misery must be for it to lead to such a tragic act. What I find distraught in this particular case is the fact that McQueen, for one, was a genius. An artist, a true talent in his own right who, in Blow's endearing and truthful words, "makes clothes fly". He had the ability to send such a strong message during his shows and presentations that it made everyone in the audience uncomfortable, yet they all kept coming for more. Yes he was a provocateur, a misogynist, a drama-lover. You can say everything about him (that he even despised women). To me he was one of the last contemporary visionaries that came about in the fashion industry. And so when I learned his death one year ago, I asked myself (and still do today): why must geniuses die? It goes without saying that artists are tortured souls who struggle to get across the made up creations in their brains. But does the whole depression/melancholy/sensibility cocktail that leads to a tragic death contribute to the status of an artist? To my greatest sadness, it does.

Isabella Blow however was someone who has always captivated me. Englishwomen have always been known for their rather extreme views of beauty via eccentricity and doing as they please (from Georgiana Cavendish to Daphne Guinness). Isabella, although not gifted with a beautiful face, was gifted with the eye to spot the beautiful. The discovery of milliner Philip Treacy once led her to say: "Hats are mostly for ugly people. I am one of them, and I need something to compensate the ugliness". How real and truthful can you get? Although she comes from a family who has a history of depression and suicide, I find it fascinating how she has managed, despite life's disappointments (the loss of her hereditary fortune and the absent recognition of her discoveries), to stay true to herself. One would immediately think how real is it to hide one's self under intrinsic couture pieces and the world's most larger-than-life hats? In her case, it was the real thing all along.

What a delight to see two of my favourite models, French beauty Laetita Casta and Polish jewel Malgosia Bela in Roberto Cavalli's Spring Summer 2011 campaign photographed by the brilliant duo Mert & Marcus. I find it astonishing how different elements of visual creativity are combined to produce a photograph like this one. I find the background colour genius for one thing (reminds me of the seas of St Barths and the Maldives). This mixed with the models' skin tones and slight auburn feel from the vibrant hair, luscious lips and outfits is just pure genius. All I can think of this is 'I want to be these women!'. And there you have it: the ad just did its job.

A Tribute to Carine Roiteld - the power woman

Oh the horror when I read a tweet from Vogue Paris about a month ago: "Hot news: Carine Roitfeld leaves Vogue Paris". You cannot begin to imagine the shock. The disbelief. The utter catastrophy. Yes it may seem a tad overdramatic. But the fact of the matter is, this woman is one of the reasons why I in my early teens, developed a strong-headed ambition to work in the fashion and magazine industries.

Yes, there are obviously other factors as to why I developed a true passion for fashion, but Carine embodied it (and still does): the one-time model, turned fashion journalist, turned muse, turned consultant, turned editor-in-chief of the most famous fashion magazine on planet Earth is my ultimate style icon and source of inspiration. I'm not going to ramble on about her much talked-about biography and CV - most of you know the how, who, what, where and when. I will constantly insist however on her accomplishments: she managed to catapult a publication into a status of 'avant-garde'-ism and ostentation by taking under her wing provocation as her most powerful tool of seduction. Yes she's done it all: featuring fur, nudity, cigarettes and even a transvestite, all on individual covers. She's done what almost all editors, present or aspiring would dream of doing, and that is acquiring both a status of artistic and commercial success. Artistic, by creating a 'house style' that's defined by high power glamour and rock hard edgyness (her collaborations with Mario Testino especially are considered epic today). And commercial, by tripling the publication's circulation figures as well as advertising revenue. But that's not all.

In addition to the aforementioned achievements, she's been dubbed the quintessential Parisian woman - a must-have quality when you're the editor of one of the most sought-after high-end publications. She defines her personal style as "chic with an edge" and has created a trademark in her looks: the smoky eyes, one of them (most of the time) covered by her middle-parted fringe and signature killer legs. She's been a sensation for street style bloggers who photograph her during fashion weeks and never ceases to impress.

Honestly, I've never come across someone who makes me want to go for my dreams. It does seem quite odd saying this considering I've never met the woman. To me, she represents someone who stands by what she believes in and has managed to have it all: the family and the career. Who said a woman can't have both? But all I can say is this: I'm thrilled to have had the ubiquitous luck to have lived during her tenure at Vogue Paris. Her last issue is rumoured to be the March one, and I have a feeling she'll be leaving with a bang. No matter where she decides to inject her immaculate taste and visions, I sincerely wish her the uttmost best in all her future endeavours... A tres bientot!

I don't know about you but for the past year I have been crazy obsessed with '80s series 'Dynasty'. I swear I've never been this much enthralled by a TV show from yesteryears! Above is a Vanity Fair portrait of the brilliant Joan Collins, who in my opinion, perfectly personifies the man-eater and power-grabbing Alexis Morel Carrington Colby Dexter (Liz Taylor just got a rival!). This cover is actually Joan/Alexis at her best: beautiful, confident and ever so powerful, hence the coverline 'She rhymes with rich: What makes Alexis go on and on?'. Well we can say that it's her bone structure for one thing and those killer outfits she wears so effortlessly. Although Alexis is the biggest b**** you could ever come across (excuse my French), she manages to strike back with her vulnerability... and softest fox coat. Need we say more?

I'm clearly in need of a time machine because I have the incessant habit of going back to the early '90s... I just can't help it! I mean growing up looking at the pages of Collezioni and having your own mother model the era's fashion was such a treat!! Here are featured two supermodels who have acquired the status thanks to their phenomenal genes and attitude. Pakistani-German Yasmeen with Italian-Canadian Linda model my all-time favourite collections in this Demarchelier shot spread. Look at that leather and the endless beauty these pages scream! On top of it all, the story has been edited by the brilliant Cerf de Dudzeele. I first came across her identity in the acclaimed book 'Stylist: The Interpreters of Fashion' and realised she has edited most of the spreads that I am so in awe of! I just simply can't get enough of '90s designs from Gianni Versace, Chanel, Montana and Karl Lagerfeld... Who said the '90s were the grunge period?! This ed is scruffed up glamour all the way...

I swear I thought my heart stopped when I laid eyes on this marvelous piece of furntiure designed by Dutch artist Sebastian Brajkovic, part of the 'Lathe' series. Hand-made embroidery with the whole piece finished entirely in Bronze, it's spectacular to have it in a living room... Watch this guy!

I am an Impressionism obsessive: geniuses such as Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh, Degas and Matisse among others have created masterpieces that make my heart twinkle every single time I see one of their works. It's beauty at the purest state - the colour composition led by their creativity is extraordinary. And so ultimately, every time I visit a gallery or an art fair, I instinctively rush to find the contemporary Impressionist (if there are, and it's my mission to spot the culprits).

To my surprise and delight, I found 3 paintings that literally made me stop and admire for a good 5 minutes (hey there is A LOT to see!). The Marini painting I spotted was at The Pavilion of Art & Design, where I went for the very first time. The red degrade used is exquisite. Then off I went to the Frieze Art Fair where I found newer artists, Austrian painter Brandl and South Korean Kang. Each deliver a beautiful depiction of what harmony of colours mean, with a perhaps slightly less romantic vibe by Kang.

There are a gazillion females and males who are proud to be who they are and what they represent. I'm assuming, that is. The individuals above are unique in each of their own way, and we know this because of the media frenzy that surrounds them, from the news, to social networks to street style blogs among others. You have to hand it to them: the pressure is on whenever they're in any type of room (waiting, bath, living, street?) since all eyes are on them literally like daggers. Getting back to the point, they settle for elements that personify best their vision of themselves and what their definition of beauty is. I'm the first to hail their outfit choices (and impressive genes for that matter). The thing is though, I feel this whole 'street style mania' is a great reflection of the diverse tastes and style tribes (are there any left as we enter the new decade?!). But I have this question: who are you to judge who's got style and who doesn't? Sure, you have your opinions but doesn't EVERYONE have some sort of individuality? For instance to me, the many people who are photographed, for the most part, kind of don't fit into my perception of beauty and style. Then again, who am I to judge?!

All I can say is that I pray my best-dressed list (meticulously selected no less) to continue to wow me with their fantastic colour coordinations and accessory matching, along with that unmistakeable attitude and nonchalance that just keeps on inspiring...

Behold the wonder: Givenchy's new Fall 2010 advertising campaign photographed by the dynamic duo Mert & Marcus features superomodels Catherine McNeil, Mariacarla Boscono (Tisci's muse) and Malgosia Bela along with a transgendered model named Lea T.

Although this is the only available picture at the moment, I am in the meantime mesmerised by the colour composition and concept - the redness plays a delightful tribute to Valentino's timeless and epic signature colour. And to my surprise, I am curiously entranced by the pink hair-coloured Bela (and the redhead McNeil) - it fits perfectly the frame! Art direction and styling are at their peaks.

Goodness, if only all royalty would be this eye-catching! Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned has become one of my favourite personalities to watch. Current second of the three wives of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, this stunning individual has become one of the Arab world's most prominent and influential women in the last few years. You may be highly impressed with the titles and responsibilities she currently holds: chairperson of both the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development and the Arab Democracy Foundation; president of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, Vice-President of the Supreme Education Council and UNESCO's Special Envoy for Basic & Higher Education... Um, need I say more?! On top of her duties and commitments, she is one of the very few Arab figures (of the world, no less?) who carry both poise, elegance, a striking bone structure... and a distinguished sense of style. The Sheikha has been spotted wearing various Haute Couture pieces from Gaultier, Christian Dior and Lacroix which suit her immensely, combined with her matching head pieces... Could you get more eclectic? It really is so inspiring to see such a beautiful woman, public figure, wife and mother of seven committed to making education accessible to all (notably in Palestine) as well as promoting young Arab women all over the world. Undoubtly, being listed as Vanity Fair's best-dressed list last year is another of her many accomplishments! I cannot wait to see her future appearances and finished projects... She is one to watch!

Introducing one of the most powerful and influential woman in the fashion industry. Briefly heard of her before? Let me remind you the accomplishments of this brilliant individual: Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou, 39, was a one-time fashion director at Vogue Russia, a coveted position currently filled by George Cortina. Neophitou then launched two magazines: 10 Magazine and later 10 men, and holds the editor-in-chief helm of both publications. In addition, this wonderwoman consults for other fashion brands and is the creative director of RM by Roland Mouret, Antonio Berardi and Warren Noronha. Wait, it doesn't stop here! She has recently been appointed fashion/creative director of British Harper's Bazaar since September, replacing Alison Edmond. Does this dazzling persona ever sleep?! And she's what, 39?! One word: WOW.

I sincerely aspire to have such a career; Sophia definitely is one of my new icons, along with Carine and Anna. Phenomenal!

You may never have heard of Leonor Scherrer - yet she is quite something to be talked about: she is the daughter of one-time haute couture designer Jean-Louis Scherrer. Born in Paris, she grew to become known as 'l'enfant terrible en haute couture' (meaning the unruly child dressed in haute couture). This was due to the fact that at age 18, she left home to pursue acting school in New York City and lived in Soho, the artistic neighborhood. She eventually returned to her native Paris and later was a favourite of Vogue Paris. She is today known as one of the muses of Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, whom he describes "the darkness of France". And to our great surprise and delight, Miss Scherrer will be launching a fashion line dedicated to funeral purposes only. The label is to be named "Leonor Scherrer Funeral Couture" and will provide outfits for the lady mourners. In my opinion, I think the idea is beyond fantastic and with everything happening in the fashion industry lately, I'm surprised no one has had the brilliant idea before her - I am anxiously waiting for those designs!

Leonor, true to form, is the eponymous Parisienne. She's uncannily feminine, chic, sexy and falls into the same category as Carine Roitfeld. Although darker and edgier, Miss Scherrer is a treasure that feeds any fashion insider.

Between Vogue Paris and me, it's an on-going love affair since I was 14. However you might call me unfaithful - I've been cheating with la Parisienne with another Parisienne, none other than Balmain. Yes, this fashion house has me enthralled! The energy vibes it sends are synonyms of cool, sexy and vibrant. Without a doubt, Christophe Decarnin has been the secret for its rise to stardom: the designs are avant-garde, rough, but oh-so luxurious and immensely crafted. My favourite piece from the Spring/Summer 2010 collection has to be the jacket above, as worn by the androgynous Iselin Steiro. 100% crocodile, the jacket speaks for itself. Who is PETA again?

This too-sublime-for-words fashion editorial features Brazilian bombshell Raquel Zimmerman looking beyond gorgeous in the most seductive and powerful series of photographs. Zimmerman never looked this good! Fashion director Cortina has recently elevated the Japanese version of Vogue into a league of its own with Anna Dello Russo. The images speak for themselves: golden skin, sleek voluminous hair (by Christiaan) and powerful make-up (by Lisa Butler) all thrown together with effortlessly demure designs captured by the multi-talented duo Inez & Vinoodh. Suffice to say that these images are a success in their own right, it does scream in many ways Vogue Paris... Am I wrong?

The quintessential designer; the ultimate clothes-womanizer; the exquisite craftsmanship; the luxury niche effect: there is no need to introduce Monsieur Azzedine Alaia. The little fairy (yes, to us girls he is) is known to be called 'Papa' by Naomi but after almost 20 years in the business, he continues to thrive. Alaia has adopted what most others dain to have - a 'niche' marketing approach. He has no website, no PR representative, no multi-flagship stores around the world. Yet his line is in demand more than ever. The Alaia brand is one I feel very connected to; I grew up watching my mom wear the outfits with so much confidence and poise. His designs make you feel incredibly sexy but in an understated manner that never goes out of style. The signature leopard print, cut out shapes, killer platforms et al give the Alaia woman what any designer would kill for: a personality, individualism and making a statement with a capital S. His Paris headquarters on rue de Moussy is where the magic happens - literally. Monsieur Azzedine doesn't do advertising campaigns and why should he? You know what they say - once it's scarce, demand uproars.

SPRING 2010: CHRISTIAN DIOR HAUTE COUTURE

One word for Dior's collection: BREATHLESS. Galliano continues to stun me once more with his eloquent designs and attention to detail. The 19th century equestrian princess is within us! Believe it or not, she has been revived. The colour palette used, from pretty pastels to passionate pinks and reds are all the more enhanced by the sumptuous background and decor. What more can you ask from this timeless fashion house?

SPRING 2010: GIVENCHY HAUTE COUTURE

The latest Haute Couture collection from Givenchy had me holding my breath - literally. Riccardo Tisci has this season dived into '70s glamour without the retro effect at all (hence the sequined blue jumpsuit). He also looked upon Spanish influences for his lacy black silhouette and the veiled over hat. What strikes me the most in Tisci's designs is the the fact that his ensembles always look chic without being too classic or "pretty" - each one of them says STATEMENT. Which is precisely what the brand today is all about.

Giving emerging French designers a chance...

Last Monday, Anna Wintour and Carine Roitfeld, respectively editors-in-chief of Vogue US and Vogue Paris met with French Industry Minister Christian Estrosi to discuss financial backings for emerging young French designers. It's funny that it took the absence of Christian Lacroix during Couture week to realise that there is a thirst for new and talented French designers. Technically, France doesn't REALLY need them... in my opinion at least. It is the established French fashion houses, having been around for as long as we can remember, that new designers look up to: Dior, Chanel, Lanvin, Givenchy, Lacroix (tear), Gaultier, Saint Laurent... New York is about energy and modernism (think Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, Proenza Schouler, 3.1 Philip Lim and the list goes on). Paris is all about classicism, rich history, and the endless hours seamstresses take to produce one sleeve for a gown. In other words, CRAFTSMANSHIP.

One of the most prominent figures in the design industry, world renowned Fabien Baron is in a world of his own. Actually, we kinda live in it.

Baron helped shape the fashion and publishing worlds, landing his first job at GQ magazine as an art director. The rest is history: he went on to become the creative director of Vogue Italia, a brief stint at Interview, Harper's Bazaar and Vogue Paris. How about that for a CV?

In 1992, he founded his own agency Baron & Baron Inc. (along with photographer Siung Fat Tjia) in New York City. Since then, he has designed countless products, from Madonna's Sex book, to Calvin Klein's advertising campaigns, as well cosmetics, furniture design and editorial pages. His impressive list of clients remain till this day indisputable.

Baron's style is immediately recognisable, part of which makes him so successful: sleek, modern, minimalist but powerful are the few words that best describe his aesthetic vision.

He recently left Vogue Paris' creative director position to fully focus on his company and being Interview Magazine's editorial director; since his helm, he has transformed the publication into one that's avant-garde and glamorous...

There is no introduction for the Spring 2009 and Fall 2009 accessories collection from Yves Saint Laurent. Stefano Pilati has emerged as one of the pioneers of the Saint Laurent legacy. Similar to the Balmain craze created by Christophe Decarnin, Pilati creates shoes that want to be worn by strong young women and epitomise today's zeitgeist of cool.

Pilati was in fact given the 'yes' factor by the late Yves himself, contrary to Tom Ford's YSL silhouette that wasn't in the taste of Mr. Saint Laurent. To be honest, every designer has a vision. Anyone heard of freedom of creativity? To get back to the point, Stefano Pilati has placed Saint Laurent once again as one of the strong designers of its time.

The last four issues of Vogue Russia have made my heart soar. They all scream glamour, opulence, extravagance and chicness. In fact, the Russian publication is to me masters this mood, largely due to the magazine's editor Aliona Doletskaya who has been at the helm since 1998. Yes it's still a baby! Although I feel it is strongly positioned in the market and looks as if it were present ever since we can remember...

A big fan and huge advocate of Russian culture and history, I love how "russian-ness" has been promoted over the years: always thinking forward, out of the box and always embracing the new wave of influential personalities.
